Online Therapy

If you’re thinking of beginning therapy, you might be wondering if online sessions can really give you the same connection and support as sitting face-to-face in a room. This is a very understandable question to be asking and one that many of my clients query before beginning with online therapy. And whilst it’s true that some people simply do prefer in-person therapy, online therapy is just as effective with some added conveniences that can help therapy fit into your life.

What Does Online Therapy Look Like?

Online therapy sessions are held over a secure video platform. You can join from where you have a private and quiet space - for most people this is their home. Sessions include the same things as if we were meeting in a room together, we’ll have the same kinds of conversations and do similar exercises. It is my upmost priority to create a safe environment where you feel seen and can express yourself freely.

Here’s what you can expect from an online session:

  • A Real Connection: Some people wonder if it’s possible to form the same kind of therapeutic relationship online as you would in person. The short answer is: yes! We can still pick up on body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice. You’ll see me, I’ll see you - it’s a real conversation where we can connect and work closely together on improving your life.

  • Flexibility: It’s no secret that travelling to and from therapy sessions can be time consuming, particularly if you live far away or have kids or work responsibilities to manage. Online therapy can easily slot into your day so you can reap the benefits without loosing additional hours of your day.

  • Your Space & Comfort: One of the biggest advantages of online therapy is that you can be in a space where you feel most at ease. Whether that’s your living room or a quiet spot outside, you get to choose your environment, and that can really help if you're feeling anxious about starting therapy.

  • Privacy and Security: Everything we talk about is confidential, just like in face-to-face therapy. The platform I use is designed to protect your privacy, so you can feel confident sharing what’s on your mind.

How Is It Different From In-Person Therapy?

Of course, there are a few differences between online and in-person sessions. One of the most obvious is that we won’t be in the same physical space and that we’ll be using technology to facilitate our sessions. Therefore, it’s important to have the right set up (i.e., a laptop or tablet and a camera and microphone, internet connection), as well as a private, distraction-free space where you feel comfortable talking.

Sometimes technology can act up - maybe the internet connection isn’t great, or there’s a glitch with the video - but these are usually quick fixes, and we can work through them together.

Does Online Therapy Work?

Yes, it really does. Research has shown that online therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions for many mental health concerns, from anxiety and depression to relationship issues and trauma. What matters most is that your therapist is the right ‘fit’ for you so that you feel safe, supported, and understood.

Is Online Therapy Right for You?

Online therapy offers a lot of flexibility, but it’s not for everyone. You’ll need a quiet, private space where you won’t be interrupted, and you should feel comfortable using technology. If you’re not sure whether it’s the right fit, I’d be happy to talk through it with you.

Whether online or in-person, therapy is about making sure you feel safe and supported so that we can begin the important work of shifting your current issues If you think online therapy might work for you, or if you’d like to learn more, just get in touch. I’m happy to answer any questions and help you decide what’s best for you.
